Yo Majesty
Halloween single covers (Art Jam records)

This project was a collaboration between Abi Green, Rex McWhirter and myself. The brief was to create a cover for the Yo Majesty halloween single 'Freak.' It is a digital release, so initially we wanted to create something that would take advantage of the freedom of a digital environment. We looked into creating a genetic typeface that favours the formation of Freak letterforms and deconstructs over subsequent generations in response to either factors within the web pages in which it is placed or in response to the music from the track itself. However, this is still a work in progress.

 

 

 

For the release deadline we began to explore seconds products and factory misshapes that were intended to be mass produced in perfect proportions. This was refined to looking at balloon animals and how a childrens entertainer might create a perfect animal and give a balloon to someone else at the party who then invariably creates a series of Freak balloon animal shapes.

A series of perfect balloon animals and their freak counterparts were photographed using the same balloon for a front and back cover respectively. We found that the perfect balloon animal looked so perfect it was in a sense freakish. We also created the balloon animal typeface which was the final choice and hopefully condensed everything we were trying to say with the other images.
