Draw with a stranger / Motion wiki

Two further responses to the brief 'Passing through.'

This corridor is an example of a space that is heavily used at frequent intervals during the day, but at other times it seems empty. I set out to change the space so that human presence would be recorded and the transitional space would be transformed into one in which strangers are encouraged to interact.

The first installation was a system that required users to be within closer proximity of each other and to communicate constantly.

I created a drawing program that required two or more people to use it. The first user draws by controlling the attraction of particles around a screen. The second user controls the speed of these particles using a light sensor to enable a fast enough turn when changing the direction of the line. People have to communicate about their every move or else the drawing goes out of control and they have to start again, much like the wire buzzer game at a fairground.

The second installation was intended to respond to both passive and active presence. An amoebic organism grows the more you stand still and talk. It effectively feeds from human presence and proximity and it is shifted and dragged by your movements. The more people stand and talk in the space, the larger and more vivid it becomes.
