Paint by E numbers: A junk food journal
Blogging with bar graphs

Above was my response to a one day film brief. It was an extension of the project, 'Blogging with bar graphs.' By visually documenting the negative elements in the junk food that I eat each day it may help me to eat even less of it. Most contain a lot more energy than my body needs.

I converted the number of kilojoules of energy in each substance per day into relative quantities of actual explosive power. I then created these explosions using proportionate numbers of detonators to represent the hyperactivity reactions that E numbers cause in children. The quantity and type of E numbers in each snack was used as paint to leave a visual trace of the explosion on the canvas.

Representation of total junk food consumed
01.11.08–19.01.09

The day I decided to dissuade myself further from eating any junk food by visually documenting my consumption of the total quantity eaten since the start of the project. I recorded myself on video consuming this food. The quantity that I could not eat was allowed to spill over the canvas to represent excess.
